Embark on a three-day wildlife safari into the rainforests of Rio Muni, Equatorial Guinea's mainland territory. This is one of the best places in Central Africa to track lowland gorillas, forest elephants, and chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Led by expert local trackers — many of whom grew up in these forests — you'll venture deep into protected areas, spend nights camping under the rainforest canopy, and experience wildlife encounters that rival any safari in Africa. This is raw, authentic jungle exploration at its finest.
June to September (dry season on the mainland) for best tracking conditions. Wildlife is most active during drier months.
Hotel pickup in Bata at 6:00 AM on Day 1.
Depart Bata at 6:00 AM in a specialized 4x4 safari vehicle. Travel southeast toward the protected forest reserves of central Rio Muni. Arrive at the forest gateway community — a Fang village — where you'll meet your tracking team and porters. After a briefing, begin the 3-hour hike into the forest, following game trails through increasingly dense vegetation. Set up base camp in a forest clearing near a water source. After lunch, take a short introductory walk to learn basic tracking skills and identify recent animal signs. Dinner around the campfire with the tracking team sharing forest stories. Early night for the primate tracking start tomorrow.
Wake at 5:00 AM. After a quick breakfast and coffee, head out with your tracking team before the heat of the day. Your trackers will look for fresh signs — broken branches, dung, nesting sites, and feeding remains. The morning is typically the best time to encounter lowland gorillas and chimpanzees as they feed. Return to camp for a late lunch and siesta. In the late afternoon, head out again for a shorter tracking session focusing on forest elephants, which often visit a nearby mineral lick. Evening presentation by the trackers on local wildlife behavior and conservation challenges. Night walk optional for spotting nocturnal species.
An early morning walk offers one last chance for wildlife sightings and photography. After breakfast, begin the trek back through the forest to the Fang village. Upon arrival, you'll have the opportunity to interact with community members, see traditional crafts, and learn about the co-management of the forest reserve. A farewell lunch is served in the village. Depart by 4x4 for Bata, arriving by late afternoon. This safari leaves you with a profound appreciation for Equatorial Guinea's wild heart.
