Venture into Equatorial Guinea's largest national park, a pristine rainforest spanning over 2,000 km of primary jungle on the Rio Muni mainland. Monte Alen is a biodiversity hotspot where you can track mandrills, spot forest elephants, and listen to the calls of over 300 bird species. With expert local guides leading the way, this three-day expedition offers an immersive jungle experience with comfortable eco-camp accommodations.
June to September (drier season on the mainland) for best trekking conditions and wildlife visibility.
Hotel pickup in Bata at 7:00 AM on Day 1.
Depart Bata by 4x4 at 7:00 AM for the 2.5-hour drive to Monte Alen park entrance. Upon arrival, register at the park office and meet your guide. Begin with a gentle 3-hour introductory hike through secondary forest along the Uele River, where you'll learn about medicinal plants, spot red-capped mangabeys, and see evidence of forest elephants. Arrive at Eco-camp 1 by late afternoon for a refreshing swim in the river and a campfire dinner under the jungle canopy.
Breakfast at 6:00 AM before heading deep into primary forest. Today's 8-hour trek takes you through old-growth jungle where you'll track mandrill troops, search for lowland gorilla nesting sites, and listen for the distinctive calls of the putty-nosed monkey. Your guide will interpret forest signs and identify bird calls. Picnic lunch by a forest clearing. Return to camp by late afternoon for a well-deserved rest. Night walk optional for spotting nocturnal species like tree hyrax and bushbabies.
After an early breakfast, hike to the hidden Monte Alen waterfall — a 40-meter cascade plunging into a crystal-clear pool. Enjoy a refreshing swim before beginning the trek back to the park entrance. Along the way, visit a nearby Fang village where you can interact with locals and see traditional forest life. Arrive at the park gate by midday, then transfer back to Bata with an estimated 3:00 PM arrival.
