Depart Bata at 6:30 AM and drive 1.5 hours to the Benito River launch point. After a safety briefing and paddle instruction, set off downstream in your canoe. The morning paddle takes you through calm stretches lined with raffia palms and overhanging vines, where you're likely to spot West African crocodiles basking on sandbars and monkeys drinking at the water's edge. Stop at a sandbar for a riverside picnic lunch. The afternoon section passes through a dramatic gorge with towering forest walls. Arrive at the overnight camp — a pristine sandbar — by mid-afternoon. Set up camp, swim in a safe channel, and enjoy a campfire dinner as nocturnal jungle sounds emerge.
Wake at dawn for the best wildlife viewing of the trip. Paddle quietly through mist-covered river sections where forest elephants often come to drink and bathe. Keep watch for chimpanzees and lowland gorillas in the riverside trees. Your guide will identify birds including the giant kingfisher, African fish eagle, and Ross's turaco. After a late breakfast on a sandbar, paddle the final stretch to the extraction point. Transfer back to Bata with an expected 2:00 PM arrival.
