Annobón Island is one of the most remote and least-visited places on Earth. Located 320 kilometers southwest of Bioko, this volcanic island offers an extraordinary adventure for intrepid travelers. With no mass tourism infrastructure, Annobón rewards visitors with untouched volcanic landscapes, primal beaches, fascinating Creole culture, and some of the best whale watching in the Atlantic. This 5-day expedition is designed for travelers who seek the truly extraordinary — places most people will never see.
July to October for whale watching. June to September for best weather. Flights are limited and subject to demand.
Hotel pickup in Malabo at 5:00 AM on Day 1. Charter flight to Annobón included.
Depart Malabo early morning on the charter flight (approximately 2.5 hours). Land on the tiny airstrip and feel immediately transported to another world. Transfer to your beachfront accommodation in San Antonio de Palé, the island's main village. After settling in, take an introductory walk around the village — meet the friendly Annobonese people, see the colonial church, and learn about the island's fascinating Creole culture and history. The afternoon is free for swimming and relaxing on the beach. Evening welcome dinner featuring local specialties including seafood caught that morning.
Wake early (5:00 AM) for the ascent of Pico Quioveo, the island's highest point at 610 meters. The trail climbs through lush tropical forest, past coffee plants and fruit trees, with increasingly spectacular views of the coastline. Reach the summit by mid-morning for panoramic views across the entire island and the vast Atlantic. On clear days, you can see São Tomé island to the northeast. Descend by a different route, stopping at natural pools formed by volcanic rock. Return to San Antonio by early afternoon for a well-deserved rest.
Annobón's waters are among the richest in the Atlantic for marine life. Board a local fishing boat early morning for a whale watching excursion — humpback whales (July–October), sperm whales, and orcas are frequently spotted. Witness dolphins riding the bow wave and sea turtles surfacing for air. After lunch, explore the island's dramatic coastline by kayak, paddling through sea caves and past volcanic arches. A snorkeling stop at a pristine reef reveals colorful fish and coral formations. Evening at leisure.
Today explore the wild southern coast of the island on foot. Walk along pristine beaches with volcanic black sand, explore tidal pools teeming with marine life, and discover secluded coves accessible only on foot. Visit the southern lighthouse and the abandoned whaling station — remnants of a bygone era. Your guide will explain the island's history of whaling and subsequent conservation. Picnic lunch on a deserted beach. Return via a different route through the island's interior, passing small farms where locals grow coffee, bananas, and taro. Farewell dinner with the local community guide team.
Enjoy a final breakfast watching the local fishermen launch their boats. Take a last swim in the warm Atlantic before packing up. Transfer to the airstrip for the mid-morning flight back to Malabo. Arrive in Malabo by early afternoon with the unforgettable experience of having visited one of Earth's most remote island communities.
